The Quick and The Dead
Knopf

This is a haunting and beautiful book of fiction by Joy Williams. The
original cover was an image taken directly from the story and involved
a deer drowning in a swimming pool. The deer painting came out pretty
cool (it is on the back cover) but I lobbied hard for the up-ended desert
locust that I had presented as a sketch and had completed almost as an
afterthought. I created all of the type as individual letters and sent them
off in a bag to designer Chip Kidd, who had the unenviable task of putting
each one where it belonged. This was one of my favorite collaborations
with some of the best material I have ever worked with.
