The Newest Indians
New York Times Sunday Magazine

Written by Jack Hitt, this article explored the growing number of people
with a marginal amount of Native American ancestry (1/64th, 1/32nd etc.)
who were searching for their “Indian-ness.” The job was of particular note
because an NPR correspondent followed me through the entire process
and interviewed me for a show that was to be broadcast just prior to the
publication of the magazine. I feel a healthy amount of pressure from every
job, and maybe a little more so working for a magazine that every art director
in New York will be looking at on Sunday morning, but broadcasting it on
National Public Radio raised the anxiety to a brand-new pitch. Some of the
fragmentation of the image is a result of me creating multiple versions of the
painting to make sure I got one that I wasn’t embarrassed by.
